This was new.
Not completely new, because there were echoes of what he and Nina had found together all those years ago. Like the closeness that came with being able to be absolutely honest with another personâabout absolutely everything, including things that had been hidden from anyone else in his lifeâeven from his family because he didnât want them to be worried about him. It was cathartic to admit weird things, like that early habit of compulsively searching crowded places, in case there was a baby or child of about the right age and hopefully skin colour that gave him a moment of thinking...yes...that could have been my child. That could have been what my life would have looked like. Maybe it had been a version of poking at a wound to see if it was healing and when the need to poke had lessened and it only happened by accident he knew he was dealing with his loss. That he could live with what was missing.
Heâd forgotten about the excitement of being able to share dreams for the future with someone else, though.
Not the same future exactly, of course, and that was what made it safe enough to enjoy that excitement and to take pleasure in being part of its creation. He would have filled the gap in his life that had haunted him by being able to watchâto care, maybe to worry but no doubt also feel very proudâfrom a distance, as his child grew up. There was something rather nice about knowing that he would be part of the small person who would have Joâs total love, guidance and protection on their journey to adulthood. He would never be too close to either of them, however, and that way there was no threat to limiting where he went with the career he loved and the risk to his heart was perfectly manageable.
There was also something more than nice about knowing that his photo would be on the wall of the house they lived in. That he would be seen as a real person and that his child would know that he had been wanted by both his parents. To that end, Cade had put some effort into learning how to take a good selfie, but todayâs setting, about three weeks into the month they had allocated to get to know each other properly, was providing a distinct challenge.
They were on an exposed part of the Otago Peninsulaâs coastline, on a viewing platform that gave them a spectacular vantage point to watch the flight path of members of the royal northern albatross colony as they came into their only mainland breeding area in the world. The fierce wind, which helped chicks learn to fly later in the season, was
